Moxibustion or Moxa: A special warming technique
Moxibustion is a natural warming therapy which increases circulation and healing. The medicinal herb mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is burned in therapeutic proximity to the body. Moxa creates a naturally resonant and healing warmth which deeply penetrates tissues and enhances acupuncture.
The heat is wonderful, penetrating and strong, and increases circulation and the movement of energy or qi in the body. I use a “smokeless moxa stick,” which is like a large incense stick that I wave in safe proximity to the body. Needle moxa is another technique, where a small ball of moxa is mounted and ignited on a needle handle. All moxa techniques transfer warmth deeply into tissues and invigorate energy and fluid movement through specific points.
In the 1970’s, a Japanese study discovered that moxa burns at 900 angstroms per second (angstroms measure interatomic distances, as in specific vibrations of a chemical process). The human cell was also discovered to vibrate at 600–900 angstroms per second!
Therefore, moxa encourages cells to vibrate at their highest levels of vitality, enhancing the healing capacity of soft tissues!
Regular application of this special warming technique can help increase the overall metabolism, vitality and circulation within your body.
