Treatment Style and Results
Acupuncture + Adjunctive Therapies (90 minutes)
Each session involves about 90 minutes of direct face-to-face therapeutic care. Much of my assessment and treatment is based on your chief complaints, and posture assessment. Treatment involves palpation across many areas of the body, locating specific areas of tension, congestion, and tenderness, and comparing left to right. Treatment focus depends on which areas of the body express the most significant imbalance and pathology.
Acupuncture is the primary therapy (1 hour). The office environment is kept warm and comfortable. Points on the ear can be placed first, stimulating the vagus and cranial nerves to relax and balance the body. For body acupuncture, I palpate and needle each point carefully, using diagnostic skills which blend musculoskeletal cues and traditional organ/channel theory, at 20+ points around the body. I use the highest quality, thinnest Seirin needles possible. I want you to FEEL acupuncture: When the needle reaches appropriate depth, common feelings of acupuncture effectively working are a warmth, pressure, tingling, floating, expanding, radiating, electrical, dull, achy, or heavy feeling. Warming moxa enhances healing. Acupuncture changes areas of chronic muscle tension, improves natural circulation to tissues and glands, and allows the body to relax and access deeper healing resources.
Adjunctive therapies further enhance circulation (15 minutes). I use hot towels & stones, acupressure, manual therapies, trigger point manipulation, and moving cupping. Moving cupping (myofascial decompression) complements Acupressure (compression). Fluids are moved in both directions, dispelling stagnations and invigorating lymphatic and blood flow 4 inches deep into the body. High-grade arnica & essential oils nourish skin. People typically feel very relaxed, looser, different from when they first came in.
Treatment Results & Treatment Frequency
The net effect of Acupuncture + Adjunctive therapies is transformative. Treatment opens and invigorates energy and blood flow in the muscles and meridians of the body, which nourishes all body systems.
REST OR LIGHT ACTIVITY IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED AFTER TREATMENT, as most people are overworked or depleted. Acupuncture stimulates the immune system, which demands extra energy for healing. A good night’s sleep allows deeper healing to occur, and one may experience less body stiffness and improved energy the next day. Some people may experience soreness, feel tired, or have a delayed healing response (possibly 1-3 days before improvement).
Each treatment is individually based and results may vary. Acupuncture works with your individual physiology and self-healing responses. Healing is influenced by a person’s age, condition, lifestyle; and effective acupuncture technique.
Optimal results usually occur with multiple visits. Frequency of treatment is a choice by each patient, usually based on budget and time.
- A general initial recommendation is once a week, for four sessions, to gauge improvement.
- Some people feel great after 1 or 2 sessions; typically these are people with strong, baseline health, and a short-lived complaint. It is useful to do both a front, and a back treatment, to get a good sense of what acupuncture can do.
- With chronic conditions, treatment once a week builds a momentum of physiological healing and helps to establish lasting improvements, similar to Physical Therapy. Over time, acupuncture strengthens the immune system, facilitates circulation, improves flexibility and energy. Many people experience significant improvement between 4-12 sessions.
- With some chronic, complex conditions, some people may benefit from longer spans of treatment; possibly a maintained “lifestyle” of 1-2 sessions a month.
- In general, for most people, once acute or chronic complaints feel sufficiently improved, treatment spaces out to once every 4-6 weeks for wellness maintenance.
I try to make each session powerful, so people gain as much value as possible with every single visit, and therefore need treatment less frequently.
Preventive medicine is key
Personalized, preventive medicine enhances energy, function and quality of life. I encourage people to benefit from acupuncture and integrative medicine, and offer lengthy therapeutic sessions at a great value!
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture (75 minutes)
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture lasts about 75 minutes, and involves world-class, specialized training and experience in FRA techniques and custom aromatherapy skin blends. The recommended protocol is twelve sessions, once or twice a week. There is no obligation. FRA patients must expect significant needling and attention to the neck, scalp and face (50 minutes). Needle removal is performed with care (15 minutes). Facial massage focuses on improving circulation in the face, neck and scalp (5 minutes). I am sensitive to each patient’s comfort levels and flexibility in the protocol is achievable. A patient can focus on sustaining strength and serenity throughout the appointment with breathing and mental relaxation. Post-session, one experiences a pleasant invigoration of the face and a definite glow. Each session creates slight improvements, and they build. Improved skin texture is definitely noticed by session Five! Rest is advised pre- and post-session.
